Using Majordomo for Argonne BG/L mailing lists

To use Majordomo send an email addressed to majordomo@bgl.mcs.anl.gov.

The body of your email message should contain the Majordomo commands. Make sure that the Majordomo commands are in the body of the email message and not the Subject: field, since Majordomo ignores anything in the Subject: field.

You may put multiple Majordomo commands in the same email message. Put each command on a line by itself.

1. Finding out which lists are on this system

To get a list of Argonne BG/L's publicly-available email list names, send email to majordomo@bgl.mcs.anl.gov that contains this line, in the body of the message:
     lists

To get more information about a particular list, use the info command, supplying the name of the list. For example, if the name of the list about which you wish information is "demo-list", you would put the line

     info demo-list
in the body of the email message (however, many Argonne BG/L email lists have no "information files" associated with them).

2. Subscribing to a List

You can subscribe to a Majodomo mailing list by sending email to majordomo@bgl.mcs.anl.gov that contains this line, in the body of the message:
     subscribe list_name
where list_name is the name of the Majordomo mailing list that you wish to join.

3. Unsubscribing from a List

You can unsubscribe from a Majodomo mailing list by sending email to majordomo@bgl.mcs.anl.gov that contains this line:
     unsubscribe list_name
where list_name is the name of the Majordomo mailing list from which you wish to stop receiving email.

4. Sending Email to a List

You can send email to all the members of the mailing list by addressing your email to the list:

     list_name@bgl.mcs.anl.gov

where list_name is the name of the Majordomo mailing list. Note that some lists have restrictions on who can send email to them.

5. Finding Out Who Is on a List

You can get a list of subscribers to a Majodomo mailing list by sending email to majordomo@bgl.mcs.anl.gov that contains this line, in the body of the message:

     who list_name

where list_name is the name of the Majordomo mailing list for which you want the list of subscribers. Note that some lists have restrictions on who can list their subscribers.

6. More Information

For more details on other Majordomo commands, send email to majordomo@bgl.mcs.anl.gov that contains this line, in the body of the message:

     help

If you want to privately contact the owner of the mailing list, rather than the entire mailing list, send email addressed to owner-list_name@bgl.mcs.anl.gov (replacing list_name with the actual name of the mailing list).
