I've just tried compiling PETSc library with 'mpicc.ibm -pg', and ran
an example. It ran fine with proper gmon.out.* files which gprof is
able to decode.

Perhaps there is some memory corruption bug in your code - which '-pg'
aggravates - thus a coredump?
