This seems like exactly the place to use an IO library to help
provide portable and efficient handling of the small requests.
Waris, is that an option? We could help provide either and MPI-IO or
pnetCDF option.

I just talked to Waris and he's using F90 IO routines.
That's an awful lot of small writes.
